294/365: Joe O’Brien, Westmeath

Death has been the uninvited guest in Joe and Mary’s beautiful home for the past 15 years. Twice in his life, his family were told to say their ‘goodbyes’. They made funeral plans, shared the passwords, got all the affairs in order. His doctors have thankfully pulled him back from the brink on both occasions.

Diagnosed with bone cancer, Joe has been re-prioritising his life. He only does what he feels able to do, and he avoids (most) situations where he could pick up a cold and jeopardise his immunity. The last 15 years have undoubtedly been very traumatic, but most importantly, he’s had time. He's seen his daughters get married and has gotten to be a huge influence on his grandkid’s lives.
